Do I tip the bartender?
A buck or two a drink, or 15–20% on a tab. Bartenders work the same tipped wage as servers, so the money is part of the job, not a bonus.
Match it to the drink. A dollar a beer or a poured glass of wine is standard; a craft cocktail that took muddling and a garnish is closer to $2.
A good first tip is also the fastest way to get noticed in a crowded bar. If a service charge is already on the tab, you don't need to add a full tip on top.
Four beers: $4–$5 in tips. A $60 cocktail tab: about $9–$12 at 15–20%.
When to tip more
Made you a real cocktail, poured heavy, or looked after you across a packed bar? Round up to $2+ a drink. Tip on a comped round too, since they still made it.
